Megestrol

Brand name Megace

Used in the following combined preparations None

General information

Megestrol is a progestogen, which is a synthetic female sex hormone similar to the natural hormone progesterone. The drug is used in the treatment of certain types of advanced cancer affecting the breast and uterus that are sensitive to hormone treatment. Megestrol is often prescribed when the tumour cannot be removed by surgery, when the disease has recurred after surgery, or when treatment with other anticancer drugs or radiotherapy have failed.

Successful treatment with megestrol reduces the size of the tumour; the drug may also cause secondary growths to disappear. Improvement usually occurs within two months of starting treatment. Because megestrol does not eradicate the cancer completely, the drug may need to be continued indefinitely.
